General Knowledge Base

Most U.S. universities require an English proficiency test like IELTS or TOEFL. However, some accept Duolingo English Test or Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificates if you studied in English previously.

The main visa for full-time study is the F-1 Student Visa. Exchange students use the J-1 Visa, and vocational or technical students use the M-1 Visa.

After submitting your application and attending the visa interview, decisions are usually made within 7 to 21 working days, depending on the embassy workload and background checks.

The SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee, currently $350 for F-1 applicants, must be paid before your visa interview. It registers your I-20 in the U.S. government’s student database.

Yes. F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during semesters and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work is allowed under CPT (Curricular Practical Training) or OPT (Optional Practical Training) programs.

  • CPT (Curricular Practical Training): Work experience during your studies, often tied to your course.

  • OPT (Optional Practical Training): Up to 12 months of work authorization after graduation (with a 24-month STEM extension for eligible majors).

You must demonstrate proof of funds covering one full academic year of tuition and living expenses. This varies by university and city, usually between $30,000 and $50,000 USD or more in total.
